Good Morning on the 1st day of November.
Today is a grey and murky day in London with the celebrations from last nights Halloween hanging heavy both in the air and over peoples heads. Outside it is quiet and we see a further change in the weather as it is markedly colder than the last weeks of October.
Just as the seasons change, everything else must change in order to evolve into something better. Take the current global financial meltdown. Elements within the financial world must change in order for this meltdown not to happen again. This is not to say that another global problem will not arise, sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west in another 10 or 15 years we will see another global recession. In what form no one knows.
Change is something that is dreaded within the corporate world, by management and employees alike. I've been to many companies throughout the world where comments such as "We've always done it like this" or "Why change something that's not broken" are uttered regardless of business, culture, country or anything else.
If we look at it another way, at our personal lives, how does any improvement come about? It only comes when we do something differently, when we "change for the better". If we are fired from our job we are forced to change our career and if we learn from the firing then we will be wary of letting it happen again.
Another instance may be when we do not get the promotion we seek, or get bored at a job we will seek a job or vocation that satisfies us. We may even start our own business. However, the population of people who tend to change of their own volition is few and far between and this is reflected in many organizations throughout the world. This is because most people who are not continuously seeking to change and improve their personal lives will not be the dynamic employees who embrace and run with corporate change.
So it is up to senior management to encourage their people to look at their personal lives and review where they are headed. If those employees are able to state that they have personal goals that they want to achieve and work for those things that they believe in. It is these individuals that management need to identify and get them to lead change within the corporate environment.
Change is not something to be scared of, we must continually ask ourselves how we can improve, do things differently and stay ahead of the competition.
If businesses cannot or will not change then how many more casualties during this recession and beyond are there waiting to go the way of the dinosaurs?
